Its obscene and offensive to the rest of us , (her eeerrrmmmm 'subjects',) to even be considering this waste of money. While we are all losing our jobs and cutting back etc, the whole "all in this together" stance is made a mockery of. And if private investers are willing and able to pay for this, then where is their social conscience? If they have that sort of money to throw around, how about they throw it towards more worthy causes. lets create homes for the homeless, rehab for the dependents, jobs for the unemployed. If I had the sort of money that could fund a f*****g boat for the already rich, who can afford their own f*****g boat, then I would want to be spending it on something meaningful and worthwhile. This makes me sooooo angry, and very sad at the state of the nation.

Michael Gove actually scares me Another one of his plans is to send every school in Britain a copy of the King James Bible - at a cost of nearly £400,000 pounds -because he says that the Bible was the most 'important book written in the English language' and had major cultural and historical significance. Hes on about longer school days and shorter holidays too-whilst the summer holidays are long I feel that six and a half hours in school is enough for kids-mine are always exhausted when they get home. This did make me smile tho newsthump.com/2012/01/16/michael-gove-attempts-to-troll-entire-country-with-queens-yacht-wind-up/

Yeah that did make me laugh. What doesn't make me laugh is the continuing waste of money in these times. What does he seriously think the kids are going to do with their bibles FFS? These people who are supposedly in charge, have got to get their priorities right. Lots of councils spent thousands on Christmas trees and decorations last year. Surely this should not have been a priority. We are being asked to make cuts but have to sit and watch councils and governments squandering money on a daily basis. One good message would be if we put the queen's celebrations on hold. The country is run by people so far removed from reality that we have no hope of sorting things out. The recent royal wedding for instance. Millions spent on what was essentially one day!!!!!!!! The vast amount of money being spent on the Olympics!!!!! WTF? If you criticise that you are seen as anti British. Just think of what that money could have been put to better use on. It might have meant people not losing their jobs. if people are working they can spend money thus keeping the country going for all. If people are spending it is circulating money around. How is putting people out of work and on benefits going to help. It means we lose the taxes of those working and have to pay everyone benefits. it just doesn't make any sense. Bankers are still getting millions in bonus' without having to have sorted anything out. Give that money to the people to spend then we will get back on our feet. We pay these people in charge, large wages to sort things out, yet it seems that they couldn't even manage a simple family budget. If a family is struggling financially they would realise that they maybe cant get a new car this year, or have to go without a holiday, the decorating can wait until next year etc etc. we pay the essentials and forget about the luxuries until next year when we might be in a better financial position. I really don't understand why these basic principles cannot be applied to running the country. Forget the luxuries like royal weddings, Olympics, and f*****g bibles, and concentrate on the essentials. Simples

I will add that I'm extremely bemused that whilst this country is into deep recession and on the verge of depression, sends or armed forces into countries where we have no right to be in.

Yes, I agree with all the above posts. I wish our monarchy/royal family were more like the Scandinavian/Dutch etc royal families......in other words, fairly low key and seemingly not "high maintenance". Supposedly ours are a tourist attraction and bring money in that way but I would like to see a detailed analysis of that.......how much comes in, how much goes out, sort of thing.

Hi Jazz, there has indeed been studies done that show the amount of income generated from tourists coming into the country is about equal to that spent on the Royal family anyway. Also studies that show tourism would remain at the same level even if we didn't have a royal family. Do we seriously believe that people come on holiday to Britain in order to meet the Royal family??? They come to see the buildings and take in the atmosphere. Tourists don't get to see the queen, never mind meet her. There are just as many tourists going to countries without Royal families aren't there? It annoys me every time, the issue of keeping the Royal family comes up, and the argument about tourism is used. It is completely irrelevant to the argument.

Yes, I suppose it is, the tourism argument. Plus I think a lot of them wander around Buckingham Palace watching the Guards and all the other trappings and offshoots of the "Royalty Business"......it's probably a carefully and well established and worked out "public relations" exercise!

People living in caves, and women being second class citizens.
Just because it a tradition doesn't make it right.

People living in caves, and women being second class citizens. Just because it a tradition doesn't make it right. Women staying at home looking after kids while men go out to work? Women thinking their only goal is to get a "nice man" to marry. Working class kids aiming for working in the local factory, coz Uni is for "other people". Hitting your kids to teach them whats right. Getting loans out to pay for Christmas, that you pay off all year to keep with the tradition. First past the post voting. The Queens speech at Christmas. Male / female circumcision. Getting your child baptised when you don't believe in God or ever go to church. Getting married. Punishing offenders by sending them to prison, rather than rehabilitating them. Going to other countries and killing their people because you don't agree with their politics (or they have oil!) All traditions!!!!!
