The Toon return to Premier League action this coming Monday in a live televised encounter at the Britannia Stadium to face Stoke City with an 8 o'clock kick off on Sky.
Having relinquished their unbeaten run at Blackburn midweek in an amazing Carling Cup encounter. The Mags will be hoping to avoid back to back defeats that would see them also lose their unbeaten Premier League record for this season. Newcastle were without both MR T and Saylor at Ewood Park, but both are expected to return to face The Potters despite a knee injury for Cheik and a broken nose for Steve.
Last season Tony Pulis men did the double over Newcastle and are again punching well above their weight both in the league and in the Europa Cup. Although also tending to stutter a bit following a European encounter which fortunately for them they don't have as a potential handicap this time around. Their home form is impressive and this will be a big challenge for any side not just The Toon.
Stoke did however suffer a set back on home soil in the Carling Cup midweek game against Liverpool so they too will be looking to bounce back in this league fixture.
On the face of it many will fancy Stoke to win this one and end Newcastle 's remaining unbeaten run. Yet if there's one thing The Toon Army have witnessed and know about the current side it's that they never give up or are prepared to lie down and roll over.
I certainly believe this will be a game of contrasting styles. With Stoke playing to their strengths by using the big men up front and across the back four from set pieces and throw ins (or should that be line outs?). I expect Newcastle to stick with their passing game and look to dominate the midfield, thereby creating chances for Ba and Best who I believe will start up front. The Stoke back four are not the quickest and both Obertan and Jonas may well prove potential match winners.
One thing for sure I don't think this is one for the football purest, but I would certainly not totally write off The Toons chances of coming away with three points.
