Talking of the smashing pumpkins: Me & Mr Bansh often have music arguments (eerr Debates) I like The Fray, he is a Smashing Pumkins fan. When the Fray brought out "how to save a life". He immediately claimed that it was just a smashing pumkins "style" copy. Mr Bansh is a music encyclopedia, and takes any musical content dispute very seriously. He has actually got me to listen to The Fray & then Smashing Pumkins straight after each track, to prove his point. However we remain in dispute about this. What do others think? CWL, particualrly as an obvious SP fan, what do you reckon. I say there are similarities, Yes, but "copy" is perhaps is going to far. Bansh.................what is the real issue? Is one artist inferior to the other or somehow by copying a style the music itself is therefore deemed unoriginal or simply derivative so it cannot be good. Of the two tracks I preferred the SP, but that's not to say I did not appreciate the song by The Fray. For me it was just a matter of personal taste. Sometimes it's a riff, bass line, piano melody, vocalist or a combinantion of things that makes me like something that makes other people agree, cringe or think I'm mad. Who cares, as the important thing about music for me is it's very personal and what someone else may make of my choices doesn't really matter. Tell him he is a music snob..................bit like a wine snob. They give you a boat load of reasons why you should like something, but will not listen long enough to understand perhaps why you don't. Not sure if you like red wine.............but next time you are at a party put ice cubes in a glass of the stuff and see what happens. The wine snobs will be at you in a flash telling you why you should not have done that...................most amusing and one of my favourite drinks............. CWL

Get a wee dram or a touch of the black stuff or beer or all of them and listen............. CWL Excellent. Saw them live in August at the Hippy Solfest. Been a fan of Saw Docs for years but seeing them live was brilliant. My taste is very eclectic and I don't dismiss anything out of hand. I prefer to listen first. I don't like "lazy" music, ie obvious copies with no effort, but I like Live Lounge, which is basically people singing other people's songs, but its good to hear a new take on things. I also find myself liking Dappy's new one. When I hear it in the morning getting ready for work, it makes me laugh and I have the song in me head all day. You are right, music is just for enjoying and getting your own feeling from it. One of the best things at the Solfest was the organic tent. Starts with 1 or 2 people playing something then others gradually join in after picking up the thread, until it forms a band.

Music can mean so much to people. You hear a tune and it takes you somewhere, brings memories or makes you think if you can relate to the words. I really like Ed Sheeran at the moment. This was the first tune of his I heard and because I understood it, and made me think of someone, and I was prompted to find out more about his music. youtu.be/xADSSBs34is

As for cover versions: How brilliant is this? youtu.be/rplbo1Uw0XoI was brought up listening to this, mainly as a folk song, but when Drop kicks brought this out, it introduced a whole new audience, to the history and culture that this song represents. Yes, I have to get around the whole Boston, American, thing, and its easy to talk about "Paddyism", but these are people being aware of their roots, and keeping it fresh. I saw them live in December 2005. They were brilliant!

Will investigate more. What do you think about this cover version? I think an angry voice adds more to it. Dont you think? Makes me think of 'home' anyway. youtu.be/Pn4rXAHu96w
