Jazz was on the Google Earth "plane spotting" site earlier, and it got me thinking about air traffic controllers - as it would!!! ;D I was just thinking how stressful their jobs must be, trying to keep the planes from hitting each other!!! This led on to a discussion about who has the most stressful jobs? On balance I think a bomb disposal unit in Afghanistan must rank as first, closely followed by air traffic controllers. What would be your "first" choice of stressful jobs?

Well, at the present time, how about anyone who hasn't a job.......stressful enough worrying about paying the bills etc!

It's all relative as there's stress in just about every job although as has been pointed out some is more obvious than others. The thing is it's how individuals handle the stress involved. How many of us could say be a surgeon with that amount of pressure, or a pilot with many lives at risk or as has been mentioned an air traffic controller? The thing is all of the people doing those roles know what is involved. Take them out of that environment and put them say in front of a class of kids in a school and the stress levels would increase. Possibly to a point where they would not be able to cope. Have a look at this lot.......... www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1380529/Job-site-CareerCast-lists-best-worst-careers-stress.htmlCWL

TBH I think those lists are a load of cobblers!!! In the first list, with the exception of the pilot, the others IMO are not more stressful than a bomb disposal expert or air traffic controller! I think the most stressful has to be something that deals with life or death. Deffo a surgeon, a bus driver in a busy city centre or a paramedic, yet they get no mention!!!! They all seem to be office based jobs that are deemed most stressful!! Bullsh*t!! I suppose it's all perception, but I know I'd be far less stressed in an office plonking on a computer all day, than trying to keep half a dozen planes in their right place, or trying to defuse a bomb under gunfire!!!

Feel pretty sorry for myself at the moment - having to inform 28 decent colleagues that their services are now surplus to requirement and sending them to the dole queues just in time for Christmas is not a lot of fun. The time has definitely arrived to consider my own future but I haven't really considered retirement as an option. PS. This also to explain my absence of late. - In case anyone noticed.

That in itself must be a stressful situation, Fairsy, having to inform colleagues & friends that they're no longer required. Keep on keeping on, as they say!

Any job can be stressful if too much is being asked of you in not enough time. You get people just doing their time and going home, then those staying until all hours to finish things. If you are salaried like me, you dont get any extra money for staying late to get things done. But its all about personal practice, and if you are doing a job that deals with people's lives then you need to be ale to say "I did all I could". Management are under the same pressure to get things done, so they cant help. With the fear of losing your job if you work in local authority, you do the extra time. When you are juggling cases and cant give everyone the service they deserve, because you can only use your time responding to crisis situations, what do you do? Do you say "sorry its hometime" or do you actualy give a shit about people and do all you can. I've been putting in 50 hrs a week to do the work I'm supposed to do in a 37 hr week. I'm torn because this doesnt help. It makes it look like the job is getting done so everything is ok. Facing the facts, we are not getting more staff. Those of us putting in the extra feel resentment towards the people who just do theirtime, and leave us to pick up thier work that they didnt have time to do. They resent us for keeping things going because we are hiding the problems. It would be easy to keep to time, if the job was not about people and their challenging, and unstable lives. What would make me sleep better? less hours and getting home on time, or coming home late but feeling that I did all I possibly could today? Neither, coz either way I still worry that I missed something important. Either way, I cant sleep, but at least I can look at myself in the mirror.

A stressful job indeed, Bansh......time for a Guinness but then the problem of feeling "hung over" the next morning! I think, too, that you are going to have more "clients" in the future.....no jobs, no money, equals more social problems and, as you say, less people to deal with them......the vicious circle continues..........

Indeed Jazz. it will all come around again in the circle. The local authorities are looking for short term solutions for saving money, and ignoring the long term effects this will have on people. And its not even cost effective, coz it will all cost more to out things right in the future.

aaarrrhhh yes Ann, thats a good point. The difference between perhaps not meeting targets and orders not getting through, compared to if you forget to do something, and it impacts on another person and their life. Oh well back to worrying.
