The Metro had a live rail at ground level 440v DC I think. The children used to climb over
a high wall and actually play around this, even standing on it with their crepe sandals.
l girl in our back lane fell across it and had burned grooves in her legs, I think some boy in
Felling was electrocuted. This was obviously before TV and computers of course!

Aye, you're right there Polly....remember "Jumping Jacks", they wouldn't allow them now...you never knew where they were going to land next, still it kept you on your toes....ever alert for danger....good training for life, eh!? Yes, we used to have massive bonfires and were for ever raiding and being raided by other streets......trees being dragged around the roads, leaves everywhere, bangers going off, smoke in the air....smashing times! Penny for the Guy ;D

I used to travel by NCB bus to Shilbottle every day from Newbiggin. It was an ungodly hour, but I used to wake up as the bus was just going through Red Row (before Amble) and marvel at the beautiful white lace curtains in the upstairs bedrooms of the terraced houses on the main street. That was till one day when the bus actually stopped and I realised that they were all whitewashed on from the inside.

Remember when i was in hospital age 8 years old. all the kids in there were given two sweets before bed time. Talk about a quick learner i would make up stories before we went to sleep the price of my stories was one sweet each from my inmates. need last to say i had sweets coming out of my ears in a manner of speaking. ;D ;D

Yes, I remember all those things as well, albeit in a different location!! (Wales!) When did it all go wrong, and kids started to be wrapped in cotton wool?
That is so true Ann. I remember so many accidents when I was a kid and they were seen as that-accidents There was a kid fell through the front window at a party we were at when I was about eight-we were all suitably horrified and yet fascinated by the chunk hanging out his arm before he was taken to hospital-and his scar was famous for years after-ditto my friend who broke his arm falling off my swing in my parents back garden-and I have my own tale-I fell off the underpass on Saltwell Road after climbing round the railings at the top-still remember my walk home crying and the scar on my chin-and in those days no-one sued anyone-it was just one of those things-kids doing daft things
