I never watch cricket but I remember the days when the players just had pads on their legs for protection, what happened to change that ?

Geordie perhaps if you did watch modern day cricket you would see the answer to your question immediately. The main thing that has changed and not just in cricket is the physical atributes of the players. Not in terms of individual talent, more their fitness levels and IMO professional approach to the game. For batsmen the use of pads, gloves, helmets etc. are just a reflection of that to supplement a players natural talent. Those bits of kit will not make a poor or average player into a great player. However it will add an extra dimension for a good player and allows a great player to simply do their stuff without the fear of being injured. The challenge for the bowler is as it always was to simply remove the batsmen any way they can within the laws of the game. Just my thoughts but hope it helps. CWL
