Here to the best of my knowledge is the current senior squad (1st Team and Reserves) at NUFC.........including nationality, position and where known contract expiry date. RThe final two players are automatically retained although Cabaye has yet to sign officially. Although at first it appears amazing there are 45 players at this level on the books. It does only represent two teams of eleven and at least one cover for each position. Which when you look further at it is not always the case. The Club also need to create some space for others to step into...... My view is in Blue to Retain and RED to Go.......although I expect one or two I would like to retain will possibly end up going. TBH I have seen too little of the reserves to judge but am pretty much in agreement as regards the higher profiles. I'd retain Ryan Taylor and Stroller (if only for the Derby games ) whilst allowing Harper to leave - having said that he's probably more than happy to sit it out on the bench as he has done for years.

Fairsy the thing that intrigued me most about doing this exercise was the fact our squad has been considered by some supporters to be small in numbers compared to many other Clubs. I began to wonder where that actually came from as I understood all Clubs had to register a maximum of 25 first teamers above the age of I think 21/22 at the beginning of the season. Any player below that age could still be eligible to play, but did not need to be named among the 25. So with in the region of 40+ players how could our squad be considered small? I would suggest overall it can be regarded as lacking depth of quality or that there is too big a gap in experience between the second string and first team. Certainly barring Tim Krul, Shane Ferguson and to a degree Nile Ranger no other second team prospect made the crucial breakthrough. Also once injuries and suspensions began to occur we also suffered from that lack of depth among the playing squad. Has the ultra cautious approach of The Fat Controller actually created this very situation? Although in fairness the acquisition of Tiote and Ben Arfa could be used to counter that opinion. Although we only had a very fleeting glimpse of Hatem. It also made me think how hard it will or could be to move on specific players. Lets face it we still have a number of highly paid professionals on the books who may not want to leave without receiving a final payoff as did Sol. CWL

It would appear that someone at The Toon agrees with Polly about Nile Ranger. With the news breaking this morning the lad has been put on the transfer list and can look for another club to join. No idea if there's likely to be a fee involved. No doubt the kid has potential, but with what appears to be a new broom approach to things at NUFC he is one of the fall guys. Certainly IMO he was given enough chances last season to push for a starting place yet never quite had the impact many were hoping for. Although personally I would have liked him to have been given a proper run in the side rather than those five, ten or fifteen minute spells here and there. Did his lack of goals cost him in the end? Despite his age and experience I have to say yes as none of our strikers were exactly prolific. If he was ever going to force his way into the side then last season was as good as it gets. No doubt he still could shine for another club, as did Chopra once he left Newcastle to ply his trade elsewhere. I wish him well and hope he does come good as he will not be the first nor certainly the last to benefit from a move at this point in his career..................... CWL

Said once before that had Ranger been given the number of chances Stroller has had then he doubtless would have begun to shine. I believe there is a personality problem here. On the Big Sam and Smudger issue- a good move for both, if it comes off. Sam will have done NUFC two favors if he takes Alan Smith off our hands, he did after all sell Dyer. Don't know what to make of today's Nolan rumour - for me he has been behaving in a Owenesque way of late.

No comparison between Nolan and Owen for me....................... That said there's certainly something going on at The Toon............... Jose, Barton and now Nolan all in contract deadlock................... Steven Taylor, Tiote, Williamson, Ferguson and now talk of an extended deal for Simpson, all on long term contracts. Ranger was also on a good length contract, but now it appears he can go.................. Is it based upon a spin of the wheel, turn of a card or flip of a coin? CWL

In a "pen to paper" kind of way. In no other way can the two be compared. Ah! now I get you...................... Mind you mental Micky only had a short time of about six months to run on his deal when he turned down the £140,000 a week. That's if you believe what The Fat Controller and Decka Lambsarse say on the matter. Personally I believe our most benevolent owner and the sour scouser are as bad as each other albeit perhaps for different reasons................. when it comes to money! CWL

So that article is going to get rid of our best players, which are also probably our highest paid? Well, what a surprise!!! What does that cheapskate want, them all on the minimum wage? And even if we do get new young players, who get less wages, as soon as they show any potential, the greedy bar****d sells them!!!!!!
