From today England is the only part of the UK where you will pay for your NHS prescriptions . Scotland announced that from today all prescriptions North of the border will be free which just happens to coincide with prescription charge increase in England. I was watching the BBC news this morning and they had some AMERICAN justifying the whole thing saying prescriptions may be free in Scotland ...Ireland & Wales but the Quality of health care in England is head & shoulders above those who dont charge for their prescriptions....Have we just been filled with brown stuff or what

Bloody hell, Nick, this has rankled with me for some time....free care for the elderly, free prescriptions, free university places......England seems to be looked on as the "poor relation" in this "United Kingdom" of ours.....whats going on! Good luck to Scotland & Wales but lets have some fairness!

Wales have had free 'scripts for years! I used to joke that when I went to see my daughter, I'd take all my scripts with me and get them filled!!! ;D There is a village on the Wales/England border, in Cheshire I think it is, that is classed as being in England, but the villagers all want to change it to Wales because of the "free" things!!! England has the option of doing the same, but something else would have to go! Wales and Scotland get a grant off Westminster, then it's up to them how they spend it.

Old bugger like me get them free already, don't we Ann ;D. However i do agree it's grossly unfai,r and you have to ask two question. Do Scotland and wales care more about their citizens and manage there money better, or it the Britsh government giving them too much money?

It said on the news last night, that England have a guarantee to see cancer patients within 2 weeks, and Scotland have no such guarantee, so obviously Scotland prefer to spend the money on free scripts! Like the bloke said, it cost 57 mill for free scripts, so that is 57 mill that has to come from somewhere else. And they said that 9 out of 10 in England get them free anyway.
I do think though, that those who need prescription drugs to function, should get them free!! I know that some conditions do attract free scripts, but I think the criteria should be expanded.

Milk the answer is no...................Wales, Scotland and NI just use the money they are given to benefit their citizens. Unlike our lot who appear to spend more time wasting it and making sure they benefit! CWL

I remember when we got free scripts and free dental treatment regardless of income. True "cradle to grave" care. Then they sneaked in various charges. Now you have people scared to go dentist because of cost, not because of pain. I dont understand how scotland can manage free care and scripts when we cant? Why do we allow this to happen? This is exactly why we need to make a stand. Is anyone going to the Newcastle march on Mayday? Or are we all gonna sit back and moan about the next thing they take away from us and not make our feelings known?

Have to admit-cost is a consideration when me or Mr Shads visit the dentist-I'm due to have a bridge replaced and the cost is really scaring me And regarding prescriptions we have asked for cheaper stuff bought over the counter rather than pay the cost of the prescription itself-if you have a few items the cost can be formidable

Aye, you're right there Shads last time I went after a lengthy time not going he did the necessary, took the aching tooth out, then started doing the rounds of my mouth. Fair enough about the fillings that had to be done but he started on about cosmetic work...I had half a tooth at the front which he said he could sort out. When the bill came to nigh on £400 I told him to just do the basics.....I'm not that bothered about how I look!

Yes, I don't understand that, Shads......can't remember why or when dental health was treated differently from medical health.....we all pay or payed into the NHS why/when/how are dentists exempt from this?

I remember when you just went and got it done, and paid nowt!! I can't remember it changing though Dental charges are a scandal, and why can't you just go when you need something done? I hate being told I have to go or get "struck off"!!!

we could get free prscriptions but something would have to give, getting rid of the top earning pen pushers that were never needed in the past and are not needed now would be a start, then if the NHS refused to pay drug companies hundreds of pounds for drugs that are only worth a couple of pounds that would be another big saving, i never agreed with a working person having to pay for prescriptions, i remember when i was working and took ill i had to pay for treatment so i could get well again to return to work, but i was so cash strapped with been on the sick i had to return before i was fit enough to do so, Dentist charges, something needs to be done about those they are way over the top, some thing else that got me thinking, if all this flouride they put in the water is supposed to be good for our teeth how come the dentists are always packed.

Well this is it skint.
Many times weve visited the doctors only for the doctor to advise that buying over the counter would be cheaper than getting a prescription-how can that be?Its exactly the same stuff.
Dental treatments a real issue because if something happens you really are in trouble.Few years back I had a filling break in half on New Years Eve and the pain left me on my knees and literally unable to speak-practically overdosed myself on painkillers to try and control it.My dad drove me to the emergency dentist for our practice which was in North Shields-I wasnt capable of driving.
Had an xray and they gave me prescription for painkillers and antibiotics which I then had to take to the emergency chemist and pay for.
After the new year I had to go to the dentist and have root canal work-came to something like seventy quid-payable immediately.
Guess if I hadnt have had the money the other answer would have been pulling the bloody thing out myself and it was something I considered.

I have heard of people using "super glue" and stuff like that to sort out their teeth....don't exactly know the method, or how they used it to do what, but it just goes to show the lengths people have to go to to avoid the exorbitant charges! Remember as a kid using the old routine of slamming a door with a piece of string tied to it, the other end being round the offending tooth! OUCH!!! Also remember coming out with some "swear word" as a young child when "me Mam" performed some "job" on my mouth! I was mortified but she just laughed.....innocent or what! Now they might just say "F.O." and think nothing of it! Not your children, Shads but plenty would! ;D
