Having watched Birmingham win the Carling Cup Final against The Gooners yersterday made me wonder just what it will take for Newcastle United to actually win something?
This was their first silverware since 1963. Having also read the piece on NUFC.com this morning about who has won what since NUFC last tasted domestic success it only highlighted just how God awful it has been for us. So back to what will it take?
Well a huge slice of luck would not go amiss if yesterday is anything to go by............ Not that I think Birmingham did not deserve to gain from any that was going for their very gutsy display from the very first kick through to the final whistle. The win was earned by shear endeavour as much as luck.
How about an experienced Manager? McLeish is no novice, but hardly compares to Wenger in stature or experience. Mind you Newcastle have had a number of equally capable managers also yet still without achieving any success.
How about the players? When I considered that less than a couple of weeks ago The Mags won at St Andrews 2 - 0 against practically the same side I couldn't come up with an answer.
We have also had a lot better sides yet the outcome remains the same................abject failure! Don't get me wrong NUFC and its supporters have been to a number of finals. Everytime I have gone with more hope than real belief we would win. Is that part of the problem perhaps...............both team and supporters just do not have a winning mentality? The thing is we have often knocked out far better sides to get there so winning is not a complete mystery to us before reaching the final.
So when all is said and done does it just come down to Luck?
What do you think?
