June used to have the same banter with the postmen. She gave as good as she got as you can imagine, but was all good fun and made the day go better. When she was on holiday some of the people covering for her if they were women, the postmen had to be careful what they said.

But in assuming that by being offended "by proxy", that you are not offended yourself personally. To follow that argument then you could say that anyone can say anthing offensive about anyone as long as there is nobody present in the room who belongs to the group that is being insulted. What if someone made a racist comment ? Are you allowed to feel offended on behalf of your partner, or children, or grandchildren? Isnt that taking away communal social responsisbility? Can I only be offended on behalf of myself? can I find a comment offensive towards others? Fot example- do we find holocaust denial offensive? I do find it offensive, but I am not jewish nor are any of my family . Does that mean that I do not find that view offensive? For another example- I am a catholic, if someone makes a peodophile priest joke to me, then I may be offended. personally I am not offended as i would probably laugh along with that, however someone else might well be offended by that comment. Its also the way in which words are used and in what context. If in a pub and someone makes a sexist joke, I might laugh and take that as a joke, but if I am in work and a collegue who is supposed to practice in a non discriminatory anti oppresive, manner, makes a sexist joke, then I would feel that is out of order and deserves challenging. , people can put labels on anything- PCism etc however surely if we all just remembered to be respectful and polite towards each other then this would not be an issue. I feel everyone has a right to think and say whatthey like in private and wihin their own circle, but that does not give us a right to be offensive in public or just outside our own circle. You could compare it to making a choice to walk around naked in your own home, or amongst fellow naturists, but it doesnt give you the right to walk around naked in public. i personally would find it quite amusing if someone came into work naked, but realise that it might offend others or be inapppropriate for the particular workplace that I was in. So therefore might find that 'offensive by proxy'.
