Of course it was fair . The majority of the people who live in the Crimea are Russian so of course they are going to vote to become part of Russia...

how do you know it wasn't fair. i see it this way. the anti russians started the trouble in kiev. riots and death result. the russians decide their people in the crimea need protecting. give them a vote to see if they want to be part of mother russia. they vote yes. crimea is absorbed into russia and the people are safe once again. If you think that vote wasn't rigged, you are so naive. What have you got against the Ukrainians? Well that's obvious the majority are Muslim.....surprise, surprise!!! Putin is going to do to the Muslims, what Starlin did for the Jews. Hundreds if not thousands of Muslim Tatars could be murders and oppressed. It sickens me that people with a pathological fear and disdain of Muslims, are applauding Putin. There could be serious consequences for the world. Putin thinks he's invincible, and the world is less safe.

On another note, I believe deep down, in their heart of hearts, conservative Russians envy the west. That is why they are so enthusiastically supporting Putin's westward attack.
And envy comes from unhappiness, and who wouldn't be unhappy living in such a dangerous violent aggressive place. Putin has had 14 years to fix it, he has failed dismally, and now he is, in desperation attacking westward to try to focus his supporters (conservative Russians) away from their unhappiness, with its consequent envy, which they have in the heart of hearts.
A very unhappy nation (although liberal Russians are at least in tune with their unhappiness, and know the cause, so they are luckier than their conservative compatriots). Or perhaps some people disagree, please say so if you do.

History reveals the best way to fuel and popularity and patriotism, than is to have a conflict with an unfriendly country, who appears to threaten there citizens freedom and security.
A good example is the Falkland islands. Thatcher was becoming unpopular, and likely to lost the next General Election. After the armed forces sent Argentina packing (1982) her popularity soared, and she was re-elected (1983) again by a landslide now known as the Falklands effect).
I suspect strongly that is is behind what's happening in the Ukraine. Putin is a nasty piece of work, but in no way politically naive.
