Had a walk near St. Marys Island today. saw a flock (20 or so) of Redshank resting on a small island in the wetland area they have there. A few ducks, the usual Mallard, Moorhen & Coot & some unidentified duck, possibly Pintail or Teal...hadn't my binoculars so couldn't see them too well. In a nearby field there were a few Alpacas with an unusual breed of sheep...dark brown with white faces. Nice, bright fresh day! Attachments:

Theres a walk we really enjoy up Beamish way-starting on a sort of main road then through a bridle pass onto the Hall. We often venture off the path and into the woodland areas where we have picked literally carrier bags of wild mushrooms-mushroom foraging is something I picked up in Germany as a child when whole famillies would set off at the crack of dawn armed with bags and vegetable knives. Unfortunately Chernobyl put paid to that over there-but we enjoy it as a family here now during the Autumn

Unfortunately Chernobyl put paid to that over there-but we enjoy it as a family here now during the Autumn A forager, then Shads, I like the idea of that but am a bit apprehensive of the mushroom/toadstool thing...I wouldn't trust myself even though I have a book on them. Once, on the Isle of Wight we picked some brown things which we had checked out in "the book"....didn't end up poisoned or hallucinating but we had to force them down...they were like eating a slimy dishcloth!!! I'll stick to blackberries although I have eaten a fair amount of foraged seafood, shellfish type things, you know!

I tend to stick to the ones I know Jazz.Usually the ones known as ceps or porcini-absolutely delicious fried in butter Thanks for this Shads. Like a lot of things, not all, in my life, I tend to rush & skim through things instead of being patient & painstaking....I know a little about a lot of things but really I should be going into things in more depth. But in this case, not knowing or guessing could be fatal! However I'm still alive & may, later in the year "in mushroom time" go forth into the fields & forest & gather (hopefully?!).

I fancy one of those organised mushroom forays.Im sure they do some in Chopwell woods in the autumn so I might finally get round to going on one later on in the year
