Winning cures everything and right now, they're not winning.
There wasn't a ton of complaining about the make-up of the squad when Newcastle were fighting their way to a 5th place finish two years back. There was some tongue-in-cheekishness about the number of Frenchmen brought in, but many fans adopted the French contingent on Tyneside - waving French flags, wearing ridiculous moustaches, etc.
Fact of the matter is that there is a premium attached to English players that's not presently true for French, Dutch, Belgian, etc.
Is it bastardizing the Premier League? Possibly. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion on it. Yes, there's a dearth of Englishmen on Newcastle, but that's the case all around the Premier League. Seems to be a case of lower level of talent + wider talent pool + cheaper "labor" in other leagues (I know it's shocking that the Monarchy isn't producing the top footballers in the world anymore).
Would you rather be successful with foreign born players or miserable with Brits? It's a tough question to answer right now, since we seem to have the worst of both worlds.
None of this is to excuse the way the team has been run and I have never been less excited, proud, or whatever positive adjective you want to use to support this team.
I recognize the players will contribute to the memories you have of the team, but at the end of the day, we're rooting for laundry and what the people wearing it did.

Like i have said before after 52 years i am getting to the point where i nearly don't care any more. Just hoping the feeling goes away but it is getting harder. Football is part of my life and always will be. NUFC. as been my life apart from my family. Just hope i can keep the faith and the friendship i found with the lads i met this year and went to the game with. All i can say is there is nothing in the world better than to love something and someone. Like the great Shankly said there is Football life and Death.

Great piece Skip, my wife understood my passion for footie all too much and never stood in the of me watching matches, training with wor Canny or me going over. She knew just how important it was in my life. There just isn't anything like "match day"!

It's a tough question to answer right now, since we seem to have the worst of both worlds. that's a loaded question. if the choice was champions league year after year with foreigners or relegation to the 4th division (or whatever they call it now). then the foreigners get the nod. but if it was fighting for 7th in the epl with foreigners against fighting for 14th with a team of geordies/english/british. the geordies get the nod. and as things are. well, get shot of these foreign lot and get some geordie/english/british boys in. it can't be worse for the money and wages spent.

To-may-to, to-mah-to. I'd rather be consistently in the top half of the table versus the bottom half, regardless of make-up...but I don't have the same ties and history as other people here do. When they're not even willing to spend on foreigners, why would they be willing to spend more for equal or inferior English players?

Great post Polly - have to agree.
As to the team I don't care who plays as long as they deliver on the pitch - Unfortunately the present crop aren't delivering at the moment. Fortunately I'm past allowing such things dominate my mind set but live in the constant hope that Ashley will sell up and improvemnt will come.
