We are entering a week that will define our season. Today we need 3 points against Fulham to keep us on track for PL survival.
Thursday sees us up against Benfica at St. James Park. Can we turn this one around? I believe that with our 52.000 behind us and a fired up team (Please note Mr. P) we might just manage it.
Finally next Sunday we meet DiCanio's Sunderland - A game which is already arousing the tastebuds and will hopefully, once again result in us securing 3 important points and retaining bragging rights . Latest developments down the road convincing me that my decision to travel over to Toon for this one was not the daftest decision I have made in my lifetime. Cred to CW for obtaining tickets.
Looking forward to meeting my comrades in arms - hopefully, not only for a training session but also for a celebration of a successful week.
Howay The lads!!!!!

Well needed win today. Once again we see Cissé win at the end for us.
Fulham and Duff has been a bit of a bogeyteam for us before. Nice to see us play better today.
Looking forward to read WL's report on this one.

All, for those of you unable to attend games at Gallowgate for whatever reason here is another of my match accounts for this season, including personal thoughts as a Newcastle supporter as the day’s events unfolded both outside and inside St James Park. I was quite relaxed about today's match for most of the morning until about 11:30am and then for no apparent reason started getting itchy feet. It could have been simply because I wanted to get into Toon early for spot of training and settled in a decent seat to watch Big Spams Hammers visit to the Red Scousers on tv, however that wasn't the cause. Believe it or not what I couldn't shake out of my head was Cannys prediction of The Mags losing 3 - 1 to Fulham. Most of the time I'm reasonably optimistic when it comes to The Mags chances of winning, unless it's against one of the Premier League big boys. Yet because of that prediction I also started to think about other home defeats during the season and one in particular, Reading! I also started to recall the season Newcastle last went down and a run of results the like of which I hope never to experience again, such was the spineless way the side went about their job. With seven games to go was a repeat possibly on the cards or just my paranoia running a bit wild? By the time I had reached The Toon my head was back together and fear of defeat firmly back on the shelf, well until I met some of the guys for a pre match training session. Nerves appeared to be the order of the day. Sat watching West Ham foil several attacks from Liverpool the conversation around the table turned, as it usually does, to our game. With the TV game in full flow and Liverpool doing most of the pressing someone said "is that what it's going to be like against Fulham or will The Toon be the ones under the cosh?". 'Surely not' was voiced by a few, 'The Cottagers are an okay side, but nothing we should fear'. Which again is fine until someone mentions Santon's blunder and Saylors hand ball against Benfica. The counter argument of The Lads could have been two up at least before they were let back into that game, kind of stemmed the tide, but fell apart when one of the pessimists bluntly stated, 'yeah but we still lost!'. With the Scousers and EastEnders nil all at half time the feeling among most was that a draw for Newcastle may not be a great result, but far better than losing. While everyone would take a rubbish game and all three points from a one nil scoreline. Time would tell... Once inside the ground I checked the team selection up on the monitors. With Marveaux retaining his place in the starting line up and Gouffran's return the only notable change from Thursdays encounter with Benfica. Despite a big crowd turning out to support the home side there was a real tension in the air as the game kicked off with The Mags attacking the Leazes End. The opening exchanges producing little of note other than being an indicator of what was to come for practically the whole first half. Newcastle have struggled throughout this season to develop a settled back four. With 15 minutes played it was again disrupted and hit by injury. This time Santon pulling up with what looked like a hamstring tear. His withdrawal saw the introduction of Anita, with Jonas dropping into the vacant left back slot. That forced reshuffle doing little to inject any kind of attacking tempo into the game from the Home side. The visitors meanwhile appeared very content to just pass the ball around without creating anything much in the way of goal threat. The sum total of chances during the half being a couple of efforts from Cisse on the half hour and a single counter attack from Fulham five minutes before the break. The only real positive I could derive from a miserable first half was that Canny's 3 - 1 scoreline looked most improbable based upon what I had watched unfold before me. With the exception of Sissoko the Newcastle midfield was woeful with Cabaye playing so deep at times there was no way he could make up sufficient ground to support the front players in attack. Anita and Marveaux looking nothing more than bit parts as they just get and give without producing anything of a goal threat. Gouffran trying hard, but stifled by lack of support from his team mates when in good positions with the ball. The usual outcome in that it ends up either going sideways or backwards. The second period started with a bit more energy and drive from the home side. Sissoko showing the way with some of those surging runs towards the opposition's defence we all like to see him make. Fulham then had a massive escape as Newcastle hit the bar. Anita's long distance effort striking Frimpong and leaving Schwarzer stranded only for it to hit the woodwork. That wasn't the only time the goal frame came to the rescue as Yoan Gouffran had a headed effort deflected on to the post while Cisse somehow managed to strike the upright from the rebound when it looked easier to score. Newcastle now had some real momentum building as Fulham dropped deeper and deeper into their own half. On came Stroller closely followed by Adam Campbell, with the Mackem Killer missing a golden opportunity soon afterwards to score with a header when free inside the box. Everything pointed towards the game ending goalless as in the dying minutes of normal time Cisse again was denied by the Fulham keeper. Yet two minutes into added time the late late show came to St James Park for the third time as Cisse scored the only goal of the game and secured the win. The number nine seizing his moment to smash his shot into the back of the net following a weaker effort from Cabaye. That was the signal for Cisse and APee to go crowd surfing while everyone else just went mental, with relief! That relief was tangible I can tell you...and sets up both the Europa visit of Benfica and that of the Mackems with relish. The Toon may be some way off being a good side but you have to give them credit for playing right down to the final whistle. Positives... taking all three crucial points, keeping on working to get something even when it looks a lost cause and not letting the pressure of a relegation dogfight get to them. Negatives...another injury the side could do without, still missing very good opportunities to score and need some of those missing to come back sooner rather than later. Next up Benfica, then Super Sunday....bring it on! WL

Great write up WL as always! Since when do you start worrying about the C mans predictions? OOhhhh that's right he is above you in the HWGA table............. Not concerned by his predictions Broon, more a case of him getting inside my head when you least expect it. Would have thought of anyone on here you would have the most experience of that happening. Scary is it not? As for him being above me in the HWGA league table more by luck than good judgement.....as evidenced by the Fulham result! Then again he now has me thinking whether or not his Derby day prediction is the kiss of death to The Toons chances of winning? Should the result be a defeat Mr C may well be found floating down the Tyne come Sunday afternoon. WL

The second of The Mags crucial games this week has now gone, ending in a one all draw at SJP, however ultimately defeat in the Europa League quarter final tie to Benfica. It was always going to be an uphill battle to over come the self inflicted damage done during the first leg. No complaints really on the night although some of the decisions taken by the referee and his assistants did leave me baffled on quite a few occasions. Now it's onto the one game any self respecting supporter of The Toon wants to win.... against The Mackems! WL
