I played with number 7 on my back, Sunday League. it was in the days when men were men and boys were boys. O i can see myself now flying down the wing beating the fullback, yes thats what they were called in them there days. LINE UP. 2-3-5 yes five forwards. just had the fullback to beat and in on goal. Wonderful days. Beer and cig'y at half time. I gave it up when i went to head a ball and only got about a foot off the ground. O i can see MRS P now when she was just my girlfriend looking up at me with GLOWING eyes. Oh!!! all i get now is are you coming to bed you need your sleep. Sih!!!!!.

Best times were the jackets for goalposts from dawn until dusk. Played later for the "works" team, inside right before moving to right back for the "old boys" and then the "very old boys". Gave up when the old ticker started to protest. All years ago now mind you

Polly, compared to some of the lads I played with as a kid, then young man, who went on to be professionals, not sure what I did on the pitch could be called playing Football! My older brother was always the better player and he went on to what was then Northern League standard. Which if memory serves me right still is or was either the oldest or one of the oldest non league associations in the country. One good thing about those days was that just about every pub and working mens club had at least one team if not more. That meant even if you were rubbish you had a chance of playing for someone. Certainly have loads of memories and some of the Sunday League stuff you mentioned brought a knowing smile to my face. I'll leave it there for now and see if anyone else cares to join in before picking it up with you again later.

I'm not old enough to be called an ex-footballer. I only play the game for fun though, I've never had the ambition to play for a team.... even though a lot have told me that I would make it into the local reserve team with no problem (must be a poor reserve team if you ask me). Maybe it's boasting but I usually have a good eye for them game, seeing simple but opening passes, finding open spaces in the bow where I just have to do tap-ins (unfortunetly 80% of those are misses ), would also have made a decent goalkeeper if it wasn't for my lack of height (156cm tall).

I played organised club football until I was about 14, then just played with friends on a half or quarter sized pitch near our home. I was delightful to play until very late in the summers, particularly the summer of 1990. That summer was a glorious.
But I must confess that AFTER that world cup, I occasionally dived to get a penalty, but no one every fell for my hopeless diving skills, and I can assure you that I wasn't ever awarded anything other than bemused laughs.
